When to Make a Bris

Bris Supplies

In order to assure that the Bris will proceed as scheduled, please prepare the following items and have them available for the Bris:
  • 4 disposable diapers
  • 4 dozen 3″x 3″ gauze pads
  • 1 small bottle (clear) baby oil
  • Baby wipes
  • 2 Large tubes of A & D Ointment (Regular-not with zinc)
  • 1 one-ounce tube of antibiotic ointment (Bacitracin or generic)
  • Pacifier
These items are available at any drug store. Alternatively, you can have them delivered to your home in a convenient quilted bag by contacting 877BRISBAG.com. Ask for Rabbi Seplowitz’s list. [Please note: There is no financial connection between myself and this company.]

You will also need:
  • 1 Firm pillow (full-sized bed pillow) with pillow case.
(Not to be confused with the fancy lace “Bris pillows.”  They tend to be too flimsy.  If you plan to use a Bris pillow, please bring a regular firm bed pillow as well.)
  • Table and two chairs
  • New bottle of KEDEM wine - Must be SWEET, preferably white.
(Remember to bring a corkscrew if you need one.)
  • Change of clothes
  • Bottle
If the baby is nursing, I recommend preparing some milk (or formula) in a bottle. This will enable the mother to feed the baby while enjoying her guests.  (The celebration will be over before you know it!)
  • Camera
Don’t forget to replace/recharge the batteries, and make sure the camera has plenty of memory/film.  (I strongly discourage close-up pictures that will one day embarrass your son.  Also, no flash photography during the actual procedure!  And no pictures on Saturdays.)

If the baby has already been born, call at any hour of the day or night.  If I can't take your call, it will go into voicemail.  Sabbath calls (beginning at sundown on Friday) should be delayed until an hour after sundown on Saturday.
